One Flower, One World

One Flower, One World Zoom

“One flower, one world; one tree, one bodhi.”

An ancient dragon nestles in the foggy mountains, home to lush forests and sweeping landscapes. But his world is just one of the infinite.

With this digital repainting, I wanted to dive into a little world like I did in my piece ‘Chameleon‘ and explore little microcosms of nature, but in the style of ‘Doodoe‘.

I’m excited by the result. Here’s a look at the process.

This originated as a stream of conscious painting that I did on the side of a barn at Progress Festival 2018 (shout outs to the paint barn!). It was an abstract of the mystical setting that is The Highland Farms in Blacksburg, Virginia, from an impressionist birds eye view from the heart. I painted to the bombastic tunes of the talented musicians who waded through the mud to Neverland that weekend.

Looking back at the photo of the mural, this section kept grabbing my eye. Initially, it was only meant to be part of the landscape, but as time passed, imagination shaped it into a dragon head. I wanted to purse that idea.Screenshot (29)

And so the dragon was born. I wanted to maintain the original intention of it being a part of the environment. It’s body is covered in various faunas, from moss to bramble, fungi to pine trees (inspired by the design of Shadow of the Colossus). Being a dragon, I also incorporated giant ingots of gold and sapphire to his underbelly. From there, I rendered the world around it, trying to maintain a visual congruity- a brightly saturated, yet minimalist feel (similar to the design of Breath of the Wild).

Take some time to explore the land. Put yourself in that setting, climbing through forests and mountains as the gargantuan beast swims through the air.

With the initial design in mind, containing the world to the center of a flower, I zoomed out, focusing on the macro after detailing the micro.
